The French press coffee is a true classic. It tastes wonderful, it looks great and has an elegant brewing ritual, which you can do in front of your guests.
French press makes coffee by steeping the grounds in hot water, in a French press, and then pressing the grounds out. The flavors in press coffee tend to be more intense because the stainless steel mesh doesn't filter out the fine particles (called “fines”) or the natural oils.
Many coffee fans consider the French press to provide a flavor experience similar to an espresso, though with a more mouth-filling texture.
There is some argument between the French and Italians about who invented it. Allegedly a French discovered the brew method, when was boiling water, but forgot to put the coffee grounds in. Once put in, the grounds rose to the surface, deliciously bubbling and with an enticing aroma. He wanted to save his last remaining coffee, without drinking the grounds, and purchased a metal screen from passing merchant. He pressed it down in the pot, and – surprised –found it was some of the best coffee he had ever tasted. History was in the making!
The brewer itself with the mesh, rotational plate was subsequently patented, in 1929, by an Italian – and hence the dispute of origin. We just know, regardless of origin, this brew method is delicious!
The key to make a perfect French press lies in water temperature, brew time and grind size of your beans. The water temperature cannot be boiling, but just left off the heat for 2-3 minutes. The water and coffee should rest the exact right amount of time, for the perfect extraction. And lastly, the beans need to be ground coarsely. A regular drip grind will make the coffee beans over-extract and the coffee can become bitter.
