Humans have a long history with the hazelnut. For thousands of years, it has been harvested and enjoyed by countless civilizations. And with good reason – it is delicious, nutritious and adds a delicate touch to many cuisines! We are thrilled to introduce our Fabula combination of delicious coffee with a dash of hazelnut.

Humans have harvested and enjoyed hazelnuts as far back as 8,000 years ago. Mesolithic (what today is Northern Europe) nut processing was found in a pit on the island of Colonsay in Scotland. Remains of hundreds of thousands of burned hazelnut shells were found, meaning there was significant large-scale processing of hazelnuts. It was most likely a very important part of the diet in these cultures.

Hazelnuts are today used to make pralines, chocolate truffles, and hazelnut paste in a wide range of cuisines. In Austria, for example, hazelnut paste is used for making the classic Viennese hazelnut torte. In France, the dessert cake Dacquoise, is made with a layer of hazelnut meringue. Hazelnuts are also common in muesli, for its nutritious qualities.

The flavor of the hazelnut is mildly spicey, with a slight tingle on the side of the tongue. It’s earthy and toasty, even with delicate notes of chocolate and cacao. It has a sweet, long-lasting character. For these reasons, we think it is a fabulous combination with coffee, as they complement each other perfectly. It’s a great variety to your usual coffee fix, a great warm beverage with a sweet dessert, or for a slightly spicier coffee to warm you up on a cold winter morning.
