Vanilla is one of the most delicate and delicious flavors out there. It adds a certain special sweetness, an exotic touch.

Surprising to many, it is in fact an orchid. Orchids grow on other trees, or host plants. They are not only beautiful, but in the case of vanilla orchids, also one of the most sought after and treasured spices. Vanilla is in fact the second-most expensive spice after saffron, because growing the vanilla seed pods is labor-intensive. But it is worth it…

The vine of the vanilla orchid was originally cultivated thousands of years ago, by Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican people, in what is Central America today. Coincidentally, this is the region where Fabula also sources many of our coffees. The Aztecs called it ‘tlīlxochitl’, a spice we today believe was highly treasured in their civilization.

Explorers arriving on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the early 16th century gave vanilla its current name. Portuguese sailors and explorers brought vanilla into Africa and Asia later that century, where its cultivation would spread. They called it vainilha, or "little pod", a name we still use today.

At Fabula we have the utmost respect for this plant, and we think it is a wonderful variety to add to the world of coffee. Our vanilla pods contain exactly the same delicious, low acid, clean and healthy coffee – and with a dash of vanilla to sweeten your day. We think it’s a winning combination!

Happy brewing from Fabula!

Always Fresh. Always Fabulicious.

Where our coffee comes from is important. We proudly provide the very highest grade, single-origin coffee beans in the world. You can taste its origin, intricate and complex characteristics, just like in the world of fine wines.

Finding great coffees is like a hunting for treasures. The best coffees come from remote areas, grown deep inside the jungle, at high altitudes. There often is no infrastructure. No paved roads. There are mudslides. Heavy rainfalls... But the coffee... oh, it is worth it.

At Fabula, we do not mess with perfection.
