Coffee is a beloved beverage all over the world and it can get overwhelming if you're a newbie to the coffee world or just searching for healthier organic coffee. Our coffee brew guide 101 will help you become your at-home barista and help you understand those fancy terms!
Step I - Choosing your Roast
The Roast level refers to how long a coffee bean has been roasted and it plays a big role in the taste and aroma of the coffee. So let's break down the roast levels.
- Light Roast - These coffee beans are usually light brown in color and have a mild flavor. The beans will appear dry on the surface and may have a fruity flavor depending on their origin. Contrary to what the population thinks, the light roast has the highest caffeine content because they aren't being roasted long enough to lose it.
- Medium Roast - These coffee beans are medium brown in color with a sweeter and toasty taste. The medium roast beans will appear to be oily compared to the light roast.
- Dark Roast - These beans are very dark, nearly black in color, and have a shiny surface. They usually have a smoky bittersweet taste.
Keep in mind that the taste of coffee is subjective and different people prefer different roast levels. Experimenting with your roast levels can help you find the perfect coffee flavor for your taste buds.
Step 2 - Choose Your Brewing Method
There are so many different methods for brewing coffee, each with its own pros and cons. Let's quickly go through some of the popular ones.
- Pour-Over- This method involves pouring hot water over ground coffee in a filter. which sits atop a coffee cup or carafe. It's great for making a single cup of coffee and allows you to control the strength of the brew.
- Drip Coffee Maker - This is one of the most common brewing methods and it's perfect for making large quantities of coffee. Simply add ground coffee to a filter, fill the reservoir with water, and press start.
- French Press - This method is great for those who prefer a stronger, bolder cup of coffee. Simply add ground coffee to the french press, pour in hot water, and let it steep for a few minutes before pressing down the plunger to separate the coffee from the grounds.
- Espresso Machine - This method uses high pressure to extract coffee from finely ground beans, resulting in a concentrated shot of coffee. Espresso is the base for many coffee drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos.
Step 3 - Brew your coffee
Once you've chosen your type of roast and brewing method, it's time to brew your coffee. We'll focus this coffee brew guide on the Pour-Over method.
- Begin by boiling water in a kettle and let it cool for about 30 seconds after boiling. The ideal temperature for coffee brewing is between 195°F and 205°F.
- A good rule of thumb is to use 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water.
- Place your filter over your mug or carafe and add your coffee and level it out to ensure that it is evenly distributed.
- Start pouring the water slowly in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outwards. Pour just enough to saturate the coffee bed and wait 30 seconds.
- Continue to pour the water in a circular motion until you reach the desired coffee-to-water ratio.
- Once all the water has been poured, wait for the coffee to stop dripping.
- Discard the paper filter and coffee grounds and Enjoy your delicious cup of coffee!
You can add milk or sugar if you like, or experiment with different types of creamers and sweeteners. Remember coffee is a personal preference, so feel free to adjust your brewing method and ingredients until you find the perfect cup.
