Until recently, Honduras was primarily known for producing commercial coffee. However, investments in processing and quality control have transformed the country into Central America’s leading producer of specialty coffee. By 2021, Honduras ranked as the fourth-largest producer of specialty coffee worldwide —a remarkable achievement for a small nation.

Coffee production in Honduras is a family tradition, with over 100,000 families involved. Most are small-scale farmers, cultivating fewer than 2 hectares and contributing to 30% of the country’s production. Family labor drives over 95% of the agricultural and harvest work, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between farming and community.

Unlike other Central American countries facing sustainability challenges due to an aging workforce, Honduras boasts a younger generation of coffee farmers. The average age is now 46, a full decade younger than 10 years ago. Strategic efforts by the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE) and increased access to specialty markets have encouraged youth to embrace coffee farming.

Through innovation, community, and institutional support, Honduras has earned its place in the global specialty coffee market. Younger farmers bring fresh energy, ensuring the future of Honduran coffee remains vibrant and sustainable for years to come.
