The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), one of Africa’s largest and most populous nations, has long faced infrastructure challenges, with limited roads, water, and electricity. After the "Rumble in the Jungle," the coffee market was controlled by the Office National du Café (ONC), which held a monopoly on exports. The market liberalization in the 1980s brought both opportunities and instability as producers adapted to new pricing.

The shift from large plantation farming to smallholder operations was difficult for many farmers, who struggled with land management and establishing themselves in a rural, agriculture-dominated nation. Despite these challenges, smallholder farmers began to gain a foothold in the global coffee market.

By the 2010s, cooperatives supported by NGOs, state agencies, and Fairtrade networks began to stabilize the coffee sector, improving production and quality. While challenges remain, recent progress has been promising as the sector adapts to global market demands while staying connected to rural farming communities.

Last year, we featured a natural processed DRC coffee with deep, purple notes, highlighting the country’s unique coffee potential. This year, we’re excited to offer a washed coffee from the same region—just as sweet, with added nuance, reflecting the continued growth of DRC’s coffee industry and the dedication of its smallholder farmers.

Very flavorful with no tummy ache!

Some of the best tasting coffee but with no heartburn and tummy ache. It's worth the cost! When you break down going out for coffee that is sub par this makes all the difference. I would rather make this at home and take it with me. It just tastes and feels better:

Delicious without anything else!

This roaster's special, Mt. Elgon from Uganda, is really good. Perfect roast with robust sweet flavors. I was immediately pleased.
