“Fabula” means story. We believe every bean has a story to tell, connected to the regions, history, environments, and their farmers.

Coffee lovers typically start with a country when discussing a bean’s origin, but Indonesia is an exception. With over 17,000 islands, it’s a patchwork of micro-climates and traditions, so complex that even experts sometimes mistake Sumatra for an independent country. While Sumatra and Java lead exports, regions like Sulawesi, Flores, and increasingly, Bali, are gaining recognition for their unique coffees.

Bali, the “Island of the Gods,” is best known for its lush landscapes and temples. But behind tourism, agriculture—especially coffee—is the island’s lifeblood. Arabica from Bali’s highlands is earning praise for its clean profiles, citrus brightness, and gentle spice—flavors that reflect the island’s character and care.

Coffee production gained momentum after the 1963 Mount Agung eruption stalled farming. In the ’70s and ’80s, the government revived the industry by distributing Arabica seedlings to smallholder farmers. Today, about 7,500 hectares thrive in the Kintamani Highlands, perched between 1,300–1,700 meters. Volcanic soil, ample shade, and a stable climate make for excellent growing conditions.

Bali’s coffee is also shaped by its values. Pesticides are prohibited, and only organic fertilizers are used. Farmers are organized through Subak Abians—traditional cooperatives that guide both agriculture and spiritual life.
