“Fabula” means story. We believe every bean has a story to tell, connected to the regions, history, environments, and their farmers.

Over the past decade, Ugandan coffee has risen in the specialty scene, with new mills and local investment improving quality and yields. While it may not yet rival Ethiopian or Kenyan coffee, Ugandan beans have become a staple in North America’s specialty market, known for their rich, resilient flavors perfect for winter days.

Around Mt. Elgon, “Bugisu” represents more than coffee—it’s a region, a tribe, and even a soccer team. The Bugisu tribe, native to the mountain’s slopes, played a crucial role in Uganda’s coffee history. In 1954, after years under colonial control, they formed Uganda’s strongest coffee cooperative, empowering the community.

The Bugisu Cooperative Union marketed Mt. Elgon’s coffee for decades, with “Bugisu” synonymous with quality Ugandan coffee. While cooperative unions declined in the 1990s, Bugisu coffee remains a proud symbol for smallholders in the region.

Today, projects like Kawacom’s Sipi Falls Coffee Project continue Bugisu’s legacy, buying cherries directly from local farms and supporting thousands of smallholders in Kapchorwa, Bulambuli, and Kween. Bugisu coffee thrives as a symbol of heritage on Mt. Elgon.

Great taste and coffee

The Nueva Segovia presented as an excellent coffee. I went with the whole bean to grind myself. Had a nutty flavor with hints of dark chocolate and was a great tasting black coffee!
